FIFTEEN

“What happened?” asked Jax when I joined him on the tatami mat floor in the center of the meditation room. It had large, open windows on all four walls, and a breeze flowed in, caressing our skin. It felt heavenly in the jungle heat. As a North Pole elf, I was used to cooler climes.

“Long story,” I said, keeping my voice low as I sat cross-legged next to him.

He rolled his eyes. “It’s always a long story,” he said as Lily rang a gong.

“Before we get started,” she said, lighting something that looked like a small bundle of tree bark tied together with string and sitting in a bowl. “I’d like to acknowledge a special guest. Tinklebelle Holly.” She folded her hands in prayer and gave me a low bow. “Many years ago, Tink saved my life through a single act of random kindness to a total stranger. I’d like to dedicate this class to her and random acts of kindness.”

Jax lifted an eyebrow at me. “Wow.”

“Exactly.”

Lily went to the front of the room and took off her dress. Half of the other attendees disrobed as well. The smell of whatever she’d lit wafted over me, making me feel dizzy. I looked at Jax, wondering if we should take off our clothing, too, and he gave me a subtle shake of his head.

“No way,” he said under his breath.

I held back a laugh. I loved making Jax uncomfortable. I was tempted to take off my clothing for the heck of it but held myself back.

Lily rang the gong again. “Let us begin.”

She looked gorgeous naked. I did not. I was kind of glad I’d kept my clothing on.

Meditation was not at all what I expected. I figured it would be torture for an elf like me since I had the attention span of a gnat. Surprisingly, with Lily’s soothing voice gently instructing us on what to do and the sweet breeze scented with jungle flowers wafting in from the open windows, I found it wasn’t hard to get into it. The smell of the burning bark helped, too. It seemed to relax me almost as much as the meditation.

After taking some long, deep breaths, Lily led us through each part of our body, making us relax our feet, legs, arms, and faces. Every time my attention would wander, she’d bring my focus back to this room. Back to the meditation. I felt extremely calm and chill by the end, but it didn’t stop there.

“And now for the couples’ portion of the meditation,” she said. “Turn and face your partner. Move closer, so that your knees are touching. Reach out and hold your partner’s hands.”

My head swam, but we did as she instructed. Jax held both of my hands in his larger ones and stared deeply into my eyes. For a moment, I forgot we were only at this retreat to spy on Ganja and get information from him. It felt like Jax and I were the only two elves in the world.
